Shahena is the owner of Cozy Quilts, a Quilt Shop in the lovely town of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Prior to Shahena opening her quilt shop, she worked for one of Canada’s five largest banks in the Human Resources field for 25 years. She started in an administrative role and worked her way up to such positions as Manager, Human Resources, Training and Development, as well as Manager of the Bank’s Ombudsman office. This is where her love for working with people came from.

Shahena has always loved sewing since she was a child. She took her first quilting class in 1990 and never looked back. After working for the Bank for 25 years, Shahena decided to turn her hobby of quilting into a business. She started by long-arm machine quilting out of the basement of her home. Customer quilts were piling up for quilting and she was getting requests to teach patchwork. In 2007, she decided to open a Brick and Mortar Shop. Soon thereafter, she became a Certified Instructor for Eleanor Burns, Quilt in a Day. In 2008, she took a workshop with Judy Niemeyer and was hooked on Judy’s way of foundation paper-piecing. While at MQX in Manchester, N.H., she took a workshop with Deb Tucker to learn her Hunter Star technique. She was hooked to Deb’s way of piecing, and the accuracy of achieving perfect patchwork by using her tools. Her true passion now is teaching. Even though she is a Shop owner, Deb, Eleanor and Judy’s techniques are in such demand that she teaches them at Guilds, as well as larger events such as Creative Festival in Toronto. She is in the process of pursuing a Certification for Deb Tucker and will soon be a Certified Instructor for Studio 180 Designs. She holds quilting retreats twice a year in different areas of the Province for people who can’t get to her Shop to learn these techniques.

Shahena was asked by many of her customers to teach free-motion quilting on domestic machines. Since she is a long-arm quilter, doing free-motion on a domestic machine was something she was not too comfortable with UNTIL she saw and tried out the Westalee Rulers.   She decided to offer a class at her Shop using the Westalee rulers and the response was overwhelming. She is now pursuing the “Westalee Design Promoted Instructor” so she can not only teach how to use these tools in her Shop, but across the Province/Country. She is available to teach anywhere in Canada, the eastern seaboard of the United States, Michigan, and Illinois.
