An Introduction to Ruler Foot Quilting with Templates – (Quilt As You Go Beginner Class)

Quilt As You Go is the ultimate beginner course for any quilter looking to develop their skills and explore the world of quilting with Westalee Design templates. The course is split into seven lessons that are taught over a seven month class series but can also be condensed into a more intensive schedule. By the end of the entire course, everyone will have created their very own 60″ x 72″ sampler quilt covered in a wide variety of patterns.

The intent of the course is to not only teach the process of quilting with templates but to also encourage the creative process of planning and designing an entire quilt. Students will also be able to experiment with various applications of each template to experience the versatility of each Westalee Design ruler. If you wish you can of course choose to cut your quilt from different fabrics to add extra color and variety to the design.

The lesson series begins with an in-depth machine setup guide. Leonie explains the ins and outs of using a Sew Steady table, how to apply a free-motion glider and the process of attaching your Westalee Design ruler foot. Once the machine is set up correctly, quilters will get into the basics of designing with Westalee templates. Leonie even demonstrates how to mark out guidelines using the Crosshair Square for various template applications.

There is no burden of knowledge assumed in this beginner class series so Leonie does a thorough job of explaining how to adjust thread tension and introduces how the Westalee Design templates work before a single stitch is sewn. If tackling such a full-sized quilt is feeling a bit intimidating there is an expedited course options where only the inner 36″ x 36″ 9-piece quilt is created. Even for an experienced quilter, this portion of the class can be a valuable refresher course from one of the industry’s most illustrious pioneers.

With all of the blocks complete we will stitch together all of our new knowledge into a finished quilt that highlights a wide variety of ruler work concepts and styles. Quilt As You Go is coming to a quilt shop near you and is an excellent and deep introductory course to quilting with templates. If you’re interested in taking the course, let your local shop know!

  3. Is this course going to be available to purchase or do online? My local dealer as been teaching the Janet Collins basic book class that I am taking. I have just about finished but the class has just been me and one or two others that come one time and I haves never seen again. I am sure with the poor turnout they will not offer any other classes. I would love to take more classes especially with the idea of design and layout for a quilt.
