A Short History of the Carpenter’s Star Block
The Carpenter’s Star is a traditional quilt design recognized by its bold, radiating points and striking geometric layout. It is related to the family of eight-pointed star blocks that have appeared in American quilting for generations.
The block is often constructed using diamonds, half-square triangles or other carefully arranged geometric units. Its strong lines create the appearance of a star expanding outward from the center. Over time, quilters have developed many interpretations of the design, from traditional two-color layouts to scrappy quilts, modern variations and embroidered versions.
The Carpenter’s Star remains popular because it looks impressive while offering wonderful opportunities to practice accurate piecing, explore color placement and create beautiful custom quilting plans.

From Quilt Block to Finished Project

You will not only learn how to create the Carpenter’s Star—you will also explore quilting plans that emphasize the block’s geometric shapes, add texture and help bring the finished design to life. The included templates, embroidery collection, class panels and guided education give you multiple ways to practice before quilting your final project.
You can follow the featured plans or use them as a starting point for your own creative ideas.
Seasonal Projects to Keep You Inspired
Along with Carpenter’s Star quilts and practice panels, this season’s education includes a delightful selection of projects for your home, kitchen and gift list. Create bows, a gnome, a wreath, a scarf, a bag, a trinket box, a zipper pouch, fall kitchen projects, jewelry, bookmarks, wine stem markers and more.
