About The Instructor

John was born in North Tonawanda, NY and grew up in a family of crafters.  His formal training is that of a church musician and he has lived and worked in Rochester, NY; Richmond, VA; N. Andover, MA; New York City, and finally returning to Rochester, NY

He always enjoyed handwork (embroidery and cross-stitch) and became interested in ceramics. Studying ceramics at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Mudflats Pottery Studio (Sommerville, MA) and Greenwich House Pottery (NYC) but quilting was always lurking there as something he wanted to explore.

He finally began to indulge in that passion by taking classes at The City Quilter in New York City.  After his first class, he was addicted. In 2010 he decided on a whim to enter the McCall’s Quilting Design Star Challenge and was happy to be one of original 174 finalists and made it to the final round of competition with 7 other finalists.  He soon began designing patterns for various fabric companies and quilting magazines. He was chosen by BERNINA to be one of the testers in the development of the BERNINA Q24 and Q20 longarm machines. In 2013 his pattern Pinwheels appeared in the book Classic Modern Quilts published by Kansas City Star.  C&T Publishing released his book A New Spin on Drunkard’s Path” in August of 2016

John is a BERNINA Brand Ambassador. He maintains a longarm quilting and quilting design studio – Big Rig Quilting, LLC in Rochester, NY. He specializes in ruler work travels extensively sharing his techniques and love of quilting.

  1. I just finished a ruler class at Gigi’s Fabric Shop in Brandon, FL and absolutely loved it, I had been waiting for this class for months. John did an excellent job explaining all the ins and outs of this type of quilting . I can not wait to get started on my next quilt.

  2. Hi John, I really enjoyed the ruler class with you on Saturday. I returned to the shop on Monday and purchased 2 books (with my husband/money). I have since found my credit card this morning. When we go to the quilt show in Punta Gorda this weekend I hope to buy a few more supplies with my newly found credit card. It’s Donna from Canada
