About The Instructor
Leave a ReviewKathy started sewing when she was 9 years old, while in a 4H group. She won several first place ribbons in the county and state fairs. In Jr high and high school home economics was one of her favorite classes.
While in her youth, she learned to quilt from her mother. She loved quilting by hand. Once married and having children, she was able to sew for her children, and has taught each of them to sew.
As much as she loved to hand quilt, she wanted to learn machine quilting, so she got books and spent hours learning to quilt.
She has worked at various quilt shops teaching classes (sewing knits, beginning quilting, machine quilting and ruler quilting) and selling sewing and long-arm machines. She has taught classes to individuals, including some of her granddaughters, and loves teaching others to sew. Her granddaughters love to join her in her sewing room.
In 2020 she saw that a local quilt shop was doing a virtual class of Ann Moore’s flower power quilt. She bought the rulers, tried them out and was hooked.
Kathy lives in a rural town in Central Utah, which allows her to cover northern Utah and southern Utah in about ½ days drive for teaching classes.
Why Westalee Design Templates: I have admired long-arm quilters who use rulers. I love that they can be combined with free motion.
Kathy is currently teaching at Quilt S’more in Gunnison, Utah. Kathy is also willing to travel to teach classes privately, In-Store, Guilds or Retreats.
Kathy is very knowledgeable with domestic machine ruler quilting and quilting in general.
She is patient and gives you the information you need to gain your confidence with ruler quilting.
She makes her classes fun while you’re learning.
Kathy is such a great and patient teacher! I was super nervous and she helped calm me and teach me that I was able to do it! Thanks Kathy! I can’t wait to take another class from you!
I took the ruler class at the Utah Quilt Fest this past week. It was extremely help and Kathy built on her instructions and had had her famous hands on demonstrations. I was able to try feathers, which was a big something I was very much interested in. With Kathy assistance I was able to do a set of feathers. She build my confidence. I need to practice more with the rulers. Excellent class.
I enjoyed the classes that I have taken from Kathy. Machine quilting is fun. Try it.

Kathy is an amazing teacher! She has been teaching my daughters how to quilt and teaching one of them how to quilt. She answers questions quickly and completely so that the student can understand.
Kathy taught a ruler class. It was an introduction to using rulers. It was an excellent class and she was a hands on instructor. She demonstrated each ruler. She would go around to each student, observe how they were doing and giving instructions by working with the student and their machine. One on one. Very helpful.
Hi Kathy so glad to hear your teaching again I’m looking forward to hearing about your classes in the new year
