This quilt pattern was designed by Promoted Instructor Kate Quinn using the Westalee Adjustable Cutting Ruler system. This makes fabric cutting faster and more accurate, to help the quilt come together faster. It can be made without these tools but may require the quilter to convert information or re-square some units if not using the rulers indicated.

The “Home and Hearth” quilt pattern celebrates both classic quilting ideas and patterns and the desire to upcycle and make good use of fabric you may already have. The clean and sharp design has a strong appeal for both heritage and modern quilters alike.

This quilt will break your stash wide open to create a beautiful bed-sized quilt. This pattern uses several traditional blocks but reimagines them in a new layout to create an eye-catching framework for tons of color and patterns. The foundational elements of the quilt are Log Cabin blocks, 4-patch blocks, and a 9-patch block called Star and Chain. Snowball connector blocks help to pull the layout together.

The quilt utilizes many sizes of scraps in all colors and patterns. The light and dark background fabrics help stabilize the visual fields of the quilt with a strong organized pattern, letting all the colors of the scraps elements shine without seeming messy. Scraps from sizes from 1 ½” to 4 ½” can find their way into the quilt making this pattern a great way to use up lots of fabric that may have been sitting around waiting to be loved!

From Kate: “This quilt pattern was inspired by friends who asked me to make a gift quilt for a family who had lost their home to fire. People looking out for others is often the silver lining when bad things happen. I dedicate this book to the grit of those who come back from the ashes and to those who are willing to pitch in when the going gets tough. I see quilts as messengers of hope. They take time and patience to see the final result. They also bring warmth, comfort, and beauty in their wake. They don’t solve everything, but they help us on the journey.
